A story of a solitary man who met the call of his country, showed great valor as a Marine Officer on the field of combat and then did the honorable thing when he stepped back and looked around in Afghanistan. Matthew Hoh is an American who chose to fight to defend his country and when he realized that was no longer the mission, he left with honor and dignity. It is an encouraging sign of how free men may make choices for themselves to serve their own rational self interest. In another time in America or even today other countries he would have been compelled by his state to continue to serve, being told he was to "sacrifice" by giving up his freedom and liberty for that of other men in another country. A truly free man sacrifices for nothing, unless he chooses to do so. It is a precious and ebbing freedom now under assault by altruism and statism one finds flowing from both the right and the left ends of the political spectrum.
