Today, should a soldier opt for release from the military as a "sole survivor" he gets screwed over by DoD. The magazine "The Hill"
reported on one recent case writing:
[ . . . ]Former Army Spc. Jason Hubbard lost two brothers, Marine Lance Cpl. Jared Hubbard and Army Cpl. Nathan Hubbard, in Iraq. As the last of the three brothers, Jason Hubbard opted to leave Iraq and the military under the sole-survivor policy, which allows anyone to exit military service with an honorable discharge when he or she loses one or more immediate family members.
Once Hubbard was back home, however, he ran up against a bureaucratic brick wall. The military cut him off, refusing to provide the customary support for a veteran transitioning to civilian life. The Army denied him any benefits under the GI bill, refused to provide the customary transitional healthcare and ordered him to repay a significant portion of his enlistment bonus. Congress has never passed legislation detailing the rights of sole survivors, so Hubbard was at the mercy of Defense Department bureaucrats.
One Californian Congressman, Rep. Devin Nunes recently introduced the "
Hubbard Act" (HR 5825) which seeks to correct this wrong. It has 296 cosponsors, so should pass easily in the house. Nunes decided it might be useful to also get support from the Hollywood crowd. He though that the stars and producers of "Saving Private Ryan" would jump at the chance to support something like this. On the surface, it appears a no brainer way of showing support for soldiers.
It didn't happen. So far, the stars, director and writer of "Saving Pvt Ryan" have refused to help. Some refused to even respond to Nunes request for support. Is it because the Congressman is a Republican? Is it because the bill arose from the Iraq War? Perhaps all that figured into to the decisions by these left wing "support the troops-not the war" crowd's hypocrisy.
But it says a lot about the Hollywood bunch. They are willing to take the money of the soldiers and their families who pay them for their entertainment. But give back? That is simply too much to ask. They are scumbags who don't get my vote with my entertainment dollar. Think about it next time you support one of these Hollywood slimeballs.
